Exams can be important

I was going through an article “Are exams so important" posted by my friend Nipun in his blog “Passage To Passion”(http://www.nipunsviews.blogspot.com). The post was on the “Importance of exams”.He wrote that exams were of no use.Rather than describing his topic he focused mainly on the rewards which were given to the winners of a particular exam.
He said that Exams cannot alone evaluate one’s IQ and one’s intelligence.
It is valid.
But I should say that Exams reflect winner’s hardwork and sincerity.
The reply I must give for his view-“Exams are of no use(which is invalid) “ is that exams,as I said above, exams show how one can improve, what one is capable of and what one’s intelligence(which cannot be measured by human intelligence) is upto some extend.
He also said that people now a days are only looking upon toppers and ignoring improvements .Actually they are not ignoring improvers. They only try to appreciate their most successful winners.
He said that byhearting is not a good method.
I am a person who does not like to byheart each and every word given in the syllabus.
It is valid.
What we study must be for ever.It should just not be used to womit in the exam papers.
Comment up on the topic.

Hi Aswin
About memorising,
of non-language subjects - only facts needs to be memorised and they come to us automatically if we've practised enough
of language subjects - nothing actually needs to be memorised if we know the language we are learning, it too comes to us automatically if we've practised it long enough.
The exception you-know-which language, is something that we rarely read, rarely write, rarely speak...
and still you need to learn it...
how on earth can you do it?
my suggestion: You change school to where you can learn something you need to learn, or Change your school to teach you those.
(Well, I had thought to suggest to principal to give students an option about which language to choose in 10th standard, but, by then things had gone far too complicated, and I didn't want myself to be seen as too much anti-you-know-who.)
Now, the options left to you are
to read regularly some you-know-which-language newspapers and learn that language,
or by heart each and every word,
or if you trust yourself learn the lessons like you learn other languages and then attempt the exam, like I did

On exams testing intelligence
What is intelligence but the ability to comprehend; to understand and profit from experience?
And I hope almost all of the higher examinations (10th 12th and entrance, are designed to test these, or at least two of these)
And, as far as academics is concerned that is what is intelligence.

about exams reflecting hard work
at this point, personally I think I scored the mark I got only as a part of a lifelong, easy journey.
Every year was just an addition to the previous years.
But for some others, they would have needed to start from square one, at the last moment. (I remember trying to help someone learn how to add two fractions in the two weeks before my maths examination)
And here I think Nipun has said something, instead of awarding the top scorers with presents, let us award the top improvers
(But of course it is difficult to devise a criteria to measure who are the top improvers)

about learning
yeah, we must learn.
we must learn for many things
one is for getting a job (if you do consider living in this material world)and there you will have to really focus .
another is for getting a general awareness about the way the world is physical, chemical, biological and social.

on exams
exams are just a break for your learning process, a break when you realize how much you've learned. and a break that gives schools the opportunity to make sure that no one is dozing off in the classes.
And exams at the final stage are things that let the government decide who has got what and who hasn't so that they get the right persons at the right place.
All in between. Just write them. And don't fret about anything that happens during them.
